Is there any end to torture and atrocities committed by the religious extremists on humanity?
Attacks on mosques and girls’ schools, killings of anti-polio health workers, suicide bombings, sectarian violence and hate literature were perhaps not enough to heap miseries on humanity that Nigeria’s Boko Haram has gone one step further to kidnap schoolgirls.
It’s more than three weeks since these unfortunate girls were kidnapped from their hostel; some were due to appear in the final exams. Boko Haram chief has claimed to have done this to punish the girls for getting education instead of getting married by this age. He has threatened to sell the girls in slavery. No one with a stable mind can go to this low. But with this one savage act, Boko Haram has left its terror counterparts across the world way behind.
Widespread corruption and ethnic conflicts are already destabilizing Nigeria and theses extremist activities will lead to further bloodshed in the country.
Though it’s already getting late. Boko Haram needs to be dealt with firm action and sustained military campaign till its complete annihilation. Pakistan too has failed to contain Taleban and sectarian violence. Nigeria needs to learn from the follies of Islamabad and its soft approach, and come up with firm action against the Boko Haram. — Masood Khan, Jubail
