ISLAMABAD: A bomb planted on a motorcycle exploded outside a restaurant in Pakistan’s garrison city of Rawalpindi wounding 16 people, police said on Friday.
“The bomb was apparently planted in a motorcycle. At least 16 people have been injured,” Abdul Majeed, a police official told AFP. Rawalpindi neighbors the capital Islamabad.
Majeed says rescuers transported all the victims to a nearby government hospital. Majeed declined to say who could be behind the attack.
Pakistan has witnessed hundreds of bomb and gun attacks in recent years, with most being blamed on local militants. The latest bombing comes at a time when authorities are trying to reach a peace deal with the Pakistani Taleban through peace talks.
The blast late Thursday took place hours after hackers attacked the website of the city’s police but officials said no sensitive data had been compromised.
Majeed said bomb disposal experts were examining whether the device was timed or detonated by remote-control.
No group has yet claimed responsibility for the bomb attack.
A second police official confirmed the blast and told AFP that the condition of one of the injured was critical.
