The number of traffic violations in the Eastern Province (EP) and Makkah exceeded one million cases in the past six months, local media said.
Traffic violations in the Eastern Province dropped by 8 percent to 640,642 cases in six months compared to the same period last year, Al-Watan daily said quoting data released by the EP Traffic Police.
The month of February registered the highest number of traffic violations in the EP at 154,443 while January recorded the least at 64,608 cases, the report said.
Failure to fasten safety belts topped the highest rates of traffic offenses in the EP at 142,608 cases, followed by irregular parking, use of mobile phones while driving, and car drifting registered 1,069 cases, according to the report.
Meanwhile, in Makkah, some 489,000 traffic offenses were recorded in the past six months, Al-Madina daily quoted Col. Salman Al-Jimai as saying.
According to Al-Jimai, the traffic offenses registered in the holy city of Makkah in the past six months included breaking traffic signals (14,099 cases), over-speeding (14,824), driving without a license (8,626), absence of car registration documents (11,909), driving against the direction of traffic (22,697), irregular parking (132,679), passenger taking rides on unlicensed cars (18,377), not fastening seat belts (169,000), using mobile phones while driving (12,462), car window tinting (20,223), car drifting (49), and 51,124 miscellaneous cases.
Col. Al-Jimai said the rate of accident fatalities had dropped by 21 percent in the holy city during the past six months compared to the same period last year thanks to strict traffic controls in accident prone areas.
