MIAMI: The US Justice Department says the FBI has ended an investigation into a possible security breach that brought pre-trial hearings in the Sept. 11 war crimes proceedings at Guantanamo to a halt.
Justice Department spokesman Brian Fallon says no charges are being filed.
The FBI was investigating whether a member of the defense team for defendant Ramzi Binalshibh had broken the law by helping him communicate with someone abroad from the US base in Cuba. The defense team member was a non-lawyer who assists the team with handling classified evidence.
Defense lawyers said the investigation created a potential conflict and a pretrial hearing in April was abruptly halted.
Fallon said Thursday that the close of the investigation means there is no conflict to prevent resumption of proceedings.
