The article “We need Sami Yusufs, not Boko Harams” (May 30) by Aijaz Zaka Syed was really thought provoking and enlightening. I hope other Muslim journalists will also follow the writer’s approach and help people understand the true concept of Islam. In a world where there are so many misconceptions about Islam, such write-ups come as a breath of fresh air.
We should openly condemn brutal terrorists who kill innocent people in the name of Islam. These elements have nothing to do with the religion of peace. In addition to that, we must appreciate and recognize the services of artists like Sami Yusuf, who is doing yeoman service to religion.
In the article, the writer asked a pertinent question: “Have you listened to Sami Yusuf yet?”
I am sure that many will say, “Yes,” no doubt. I have been enjoying the works of this talented artist from the time he released his first album, “Al Mu’alim” in 2003, when he was only 23. Since then he has released many outstanding albums like “Mother,” “Make me strong,” “All I need,” “My Ummah” and many others. Sami Yusuf received the prestigious “Doctor of Letters Award” from Roehampton University in 2009. In year 2009 and 2010, he was recognized as one of the 500 most influential Muslims in the world. He was also crowned as the “king of Islamic pop.” Yusuf has performed for packed live audiences in Britain, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands. Some of his numbers on YouTube have topped above 10 million views. His presentation is absolutely scintillating and he drives whatever subject choses right into the listeners’ hearts. We should give him all the credit he deserves. — S.H. Moulana, Riyadh
