A total of 945,360 commuters crossed the King Fahd Causeway between Saudi Arabia and Bahrain over the past two weeks, the Eastern Province Passport Department said here recently.
This amounted to 59,000 commuters a day from May 22 to June 6, said Col. Mualla Al-Otaibi, the media spokesperson of the department. There were many travelers on the causeway from Friday, he said.
Al-Otaibi said the department had to use all 18 of its cabins to deal with the huge numbers of commuters leaving and entering Saudi Arabia.
He said the department has a plan to ensure that travelers wait no more than 15 minutes to have their travel documents processed, except for the peak hours from late in the afternoon until 9 p.m.
“Summer vacation differs from school days because a number of travelers from Gulf countries also cross the causeway into the Kingdom of Bahrain to visit relatives and enjoy the summer there,” he said.
