The Jeddah Police have arrested a gang of six robbers, all immediate relatives, who had committed several robberies in south Jeddah.
The head of the gang was an old man aged 83 while his son and grandsons comprising the other members ranged from 18-25 years of age. They were all living in the Kingdom in violation of the residency laws, according to the police.
After receiving several complaints of the increased number of shop thefts in south Jeddah, the Jeddah Police formed some criminal investigation teams to probe the matter.
“The investigations revealed that a similar modus operandi was being adopted in all cases,” said Lt. Aati Al-Quraish, official spokesman of the Jeddah Police on Friday.
The six accused are Arab nationals and of the same family living without iqamas, he said in a statement.
“The grandfather is 83 years old, his son is 25 and the four grandchildren are in the age group of 18-25 years old,” Al Quraish said.
He said the Jamiah Police Station is probing the case where the accused are being held and proceedings are underway.
Following the initial questioning, the accused will be referred to the Bureau of Prosecution and Investigation for further action.
The crowded neighborhoods of south Jeddah are notorious for crimes. The theft cases in shops have been on the rise in recent times, but the police are continuously cracking down and nabbing the culprits, the majority of them comprising Arab expatriates without valid residence permits.
