Impact of media

This is with reference to the report “Serial showing adultery during Ramadan flayed” (June 15). I fully endorse the views of Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al-Asheikh. The respected scholar has voiced concern over airing of such programs during Ramadan. He should move to impose a ban on such inappropriate programs even after Ramadan. Such shows are not good for anyone and destroy social fabric.
In the West, media experts are carrying out researches on the impact of Television and other media on individual and group behavior. They have found strong relation between the two. If we search the Internet, we will come across several studies showing the harmful effects of violent games, television programs and movies on people particularly children.
This is why most of the developed countries have come up with the idea of ratings. This is commendable but why should we allow such programs in the first place. The concepts of freedom are different in the West. In case of Muslim countries, the concept is different and nobody should object to it. Our actions are dictated by the teachings of Islam — Qur’an and Sunnah — and this concept makes all the difference.
Many people might think that Islam is against entertainment, which is not correct. Islam promotes healthy activities in society. What is the use of watching a drama or movie portraying immoral behaviors or actions? It is a complete waste of time. I don’t think this is a good idea of entertainment. Such programs have negative impact on children. Even adults get affected psychologically. The impact, however, is subtle and its impact is revealed in the long run. We should be careful in what we choose to watch on the TV or Internet. The human brain is a complex machine. It is very difficult to understand its overall machinations. If we follow Islam in the true sense then only we can maintain a proper and healthy society. — Lala, Jeddah
