If the Bharatiya Janata Party wants to create a positive image of itself, Prime Minister Narendra Modi should take effective measures to rein in Hindutva extremists. Failure to do so will only aggravate the situation and reverse BJP’s electoral gains and its impact will definitely be felt in the next general elections.
Modi should not show any leniency toward the Hindu extremist elements within his party and other sister organizations otherwise the country will slip into anarchy.
These hard-liners, in the name of religion, nationalism and culture, are up in arms against the lofty ideals of Indian society. These elements pose a major threat to the social fabric of India. The fascist factions operating under various names are behind communal riots across the country. Due to their political clout, they are roaming around freely. Without checking their activities, it would be difficult for the current government to implement inclusive policies and put India on the path of genuine stability and progress.
These Hindu zealots could easily be termed terrorists. The government should take all possible measures to distance itself from these elements and take stern action against them and their supporters. BJP has a good opportunity to break away with its past and emerge as a true national political party. — Anees Lokhande, Alkhobar
