JEDDAH: Arab News has been named the top English-language newspaper in the Arab world in terms of readership, according to a survey conducted by 4International Media & Newspapers (4imn.com).
Arab News was ranked third in the region when non-English papers are included, closely behind Egyptian newspapers Al-Ahram and Al-Masry Al-Youm.
The ranking was topped by The New York Times followed by the UK’s Daily Mail, with the Chinese The People’s Daily beating out The Washington Post for third place. British broadsheet The Daily Telegraph was fifth, with The Guardian, USA Today, The Wall Street Journal, China Daily and The Los Angeles Times completing the remaining Top 10 spots.
In the Gulf region, Arab News is the No. 1 English language daily, followed by Gulf News, The National and Khaleej Times.
Arab News Editor in Chief Mohammed Fahad Al-Harthi, who has overseen a shift in the newspaper’s focus, welcomed the survey’s results.
“Arab News is a publication committed to serving its readership and this report shows us that our readers support our vision for the paper,” said Al-Harthi.
4imn.com includes 7,000 newspapers, ranked by Web popularity, in 200 countries. “The current ranking is based upon an algorithm including three unbiased and independent web metrics extracted from three different search engines: Google Page Rank, Alexa Traffic Rank and Majestic Seo Referring Domains,” the directory’s website said.
Arab News, part of the Saudi Research and Marketing Group, was founded in 1975 and is one of two English language dailies in Saudi Arabia. Arab News has seen a dramatic increase in popularity over the past few years, particularly in its digital offering.
