The next item on Donald Trump’s agenda is his inauguration as US president on Jan. 20. However, Vinz Koller, an Electoral College member and Democrat in California, has filed a lawsuit in an attempt to block the inauguration. Koller is the 10th presidential elector to join the anti-Trump club, with a similar action filed in Colorado.
Hillary Clinton reportedly received more votes than any white man in the history of US presidential elections. The only black president, Barack Obama, was the highest polled ever in the 2008 election. Clinton’s majority over Trump was 2.7 million, yet she ended up the loser. Trump, who in 2012 condemned the Electoral College as “a disaster for democracy,” is now hailing it since he lost the popular vote by a wide margin.
American voters are pushing for reform of the Electoral College and a popular national vote. This issue reminds me of the late Soviet leader Joseph Stalin’s statement about elections: “The people who cast the votes decide nothing, but the people who count the votes decide everything.”
