JEDDAH: Jeddah Civil Defense declared full control of a blaze, that broke out Tuesday in the historical quarter of central Jeddah and damaged six buildings, three of which collapsed.
Spokesman Col. Saeed Sarhan said that Jeddah Civil Defense teams evacuated about 60 people to safe areas while firefighters put out the fire.
According to preliminary reports, the blaze initially broke out in a four-story building with wooden ceilings, and then spread to two more nearby historical buildings, he said. The fire then reached three more buildings, bringing the number of damaged buildings to six.
The spokesman commended the fast response of firefighters and their success in preventing the fire from reaching other buildings. He also applauded the efforts of rescue teams who evacuated all the affected buildings around the blaze site.
Moreover, the spokesman praised the active role of the health authorities and the Saudi Red Crescent Authority (SRCA) who established a medical area to handle any casualties. Security forces secured the area and facilitated the fast arrival of Civil Defense teams to the area. There were also teams from Jeddah Electricity Company and Jeddah municipality.
Jeddah Gov. Prince Mishaal bin Majed closely followed the course of the blaze and called the director of Civil Defense in Jeddah, Col. Talal Bedawi, to enquire about the safety of Civil Defense personnel and express his gratitude to firefighters and rescue teams for their efforts.
