British Council invites Saudis to apply for 2002/03 scholarships

RIYADH, 13 May  — The British Council (BC) has invited Saudis to apply for the prestigious British Chevening Scholarships instituted by the UK government for the year 2002/03.  According to Peter Grout, the deputy director of the BC in the Kingdom,  “These scholarships, managed in the Kingdom by BC on behalf of the British Embassy, are intended for graduate professionals of outstanding ability. They will give the opportunity for further study or training in any subject at British universities or other accredited training institutions and in an area of importance to relations between Britain and Saudi Arabia.”


He explained further: “The awards are for between three and twelve months study and include tuition fees, international air tickets and a monthly living allowance. In the case of an award for twelve months, the candidate will normally be registered for a Master’s degree.”


Regarding eligibility, Grout said: “Chevening Scholarships are open to Saudis, male or female, who meet the requirements. These are being under 40, holders of a bachelor’s degree with a grade of very good or a GPA of 3.5 or above, highly proficient in written and spoken English and be in a position of significant professional responsibility.”


Applications must be received by Nov. 15.  A shortlist will be announced in early December and interviews held in January 2002 with final decisions in February 2002. This year there will be a total of nine new awards in subjects ranging from law to special education and management.
