ISLAMABAD, 24 May — Pakistan and Azerbaijan resolved yesterday to expand cooperation in a number of areas. Specifically in both the defense and economic sectors, there exists a potential for cooperation.

The Azerbaijan Defense Minister, Col. Gen. Safar A. Abiyev, arrived in Islamabad yesterday, met Chief Executive Gen. Pervez Musharraf, held talks with the foreign minister, and exchanged views with Defense Secretary Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Hamid Nawaz Khan.

Gen. Musharraf accepted an invitation to visit Azerbaijan and also invited the Azerbaijan president to visit Pakistan in the near future. In the meeting with the foreign minister, matters pertaining to bilateral affairs and mutual cooperation in various fields were discussed.

The foreign minister informed the Azeri defense minister of the situation in Indian-occupied Kashmir and the brutalities, perpetrated against the innocent people of the valley by Indian forces.

He said Pakistan and Azerbaijan are linked by the same religion and culture and their support for one another is ample proof of the deep understanding and friendship between them.  The Azeri delegation also visited Military School of Signals (MCS) in Rawalpindi and was given a detailed briefing by the commandant.
