JEDDAH, 5 January — An Egyptian pilgrim was strangled to death by her husband in a workshop in a central district of the city on Wednesday, Al-Madinah newspaper reported yesterday.
The murder was committed in an apartment, which was used as tailor's shop in a residential building on Sitteen Street. The killing occurred following a financial dispute between Muhammad Ezzuddin, an Egyptian tailor, and his wife Muna Ibrahim Abdul Aziz. Muna came to the Kingdom on the 17th day of Ramadan to perform Umrah, according Al-Madinah newspaper.
The police arrested the culprit soon after the crime was committed, said Brig. Gen. Saleh Al-Olayan, director of police in the Jeddah governorate. Investigations are continuing to determine the exact motive behind the murder, the police officer said.
A caretaker of the apartment building said he used to meet Muhammad Ibrahim almost every day. The Egyptian's apartment has undergone repairs and installations, particularly of the air-conditioning system, the watchman added. The flat was rented out six months ago and the landlord, a resident of Taif, had no idea who the new tenant was.
Murders of family members are on the increase in Jeddah which has not yet recovered from the trauma of the killings of 11 members of two families in Taufeeq district before Eid.
