RIYADH, 5 June — The Saudi government signed a $418 million contract with the French engineering group Alstom Power yesterday for the second phase of the Shuaibah power plant, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

Under the contract, signed by Minister of Industry and Electricity Hashim Yamani, Alstom will provide fourth and fifth generators for the Shuaibah plant south of Jeddah.

The combined capacity of the new generators will be 740 kilowatts, raising overall capacity to 1,840 megawatts. The project, launched in 1999, is to go on line within days to serve major cities in the Western region.
