Pakistan: Mansur appears in court

ISLAMABAD, 8 June — An accountability court yesterday gave the investigating agencies another 15 days to grill former Navy Chief Adm. Mansurul Haq facing charges of corruption. The accused appeared before the court yesterday. The agencies interrogating the former admiral in connection with graft charges sought another 15 days to complete their investigation. Mansur was extradition by the United States on May 24 to stand trial in Pakistan for allegedly receiving commission and kickbacks in defense deals to the tune of several million dollars. Additional Deputy Prosecutor General Raja Afzal requested the court yesterday that Mansur, who is lodged in the Sihala Rest House, be allowed to remain in the custody of investigating agencies for another 15 days. Masnur will remain in the custody of the investigators till June 22. The judge was informed that the request of Najma Mansur, wife of the former admiral, for an out-of-court settlement was being considered by the National Accountability Bureau. In a related development, a police official told the court that the whereabouts of Aamir Lodhi, a co-accused in the case, were unknown. The court ruled that proceedings against Lodhi be initiated before he is declared a proclaimed offender.
