JEDDAH, 16 January — A burglary took place at Al-Amwaaj Amusement Park on Jeddah's corniche Sunday morning resulting in a loss of SR135,000 in cash and in jewelry.

The thieves broke in through the gate of the amusement park at 5 a.m. and subsequently broke open the safe, despite the presence of numerous security guards in the park.

Dakeel Al-Harithy, an official at Al-Amwaaj, said: "The incident took place in the early morning. We believe that more than one person was involved and that they are professional criminals because of the way they broke the safe and the tools they used. They took cash in addition to the gold jewelry which many clients leave behind specially during the Eid holidays."

Al-Harithy added that the police have apprehended several suspects. He said he believed that the burglars chose early morning for the theft because they knew that the streets would be empty and most of the people awake at the time would be busy with their Fajr prayers.

"A SR300,000 check which was in the safe was later found in the office to our relief," Al-Harithy added.
