AMMAN, 4 February — Jordan's King Abdallah and Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al-Faisal yesterday reviewed the preparations to make next month's Arab summit in Amman a success, the official Saudi Press Agency said.
Prince Saud, who arrived in Amman earlier in the day, assured King Abdallah that Riyadh was committed to making the summit a success, the agency added. The Saudi minister hoped that the summit would come out with a united stand on all issues facing the Arab world.
The SPA said King Abdallah received a message from Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Fahd on strengthening bilateral relations and regional issues. Prince Saud handed the message to the Jordanian king. The Jordanian news agency Petra said the two sides discussed the issues that may come up during the annual summit.
King Abdallah stressed the importance of focusing on Arab economic cooperation in the summit along with other important issues that include Arab solidarity, the Petra agency said.
Also discussed at the meeting at King Abdallah's residence, Beit Al-Barakeh, was the faltering peace process.
The last Arab summit was held in Cairo last year soon after the beginning of the Palestinian intifada (uprising) against Israeli occupation.
Arab leaders then pledged their support for Palestinians and condemned Israel's armed attacks against unarmed Palestinians but failed to agree on severing ties with the Jewish state, which has peace deals with Jordan and Egypt.
Crown Prince Abdullah, deputy premier and commander of the National Guard, attended the Cairo summit on behalf of King Fahd, and proposed the setting up of two $1 billion funds to support Al-Quds intifada and protect the Islamic and Arab character of Jerusalem.
Qaddafi message: Prince Abdullah yesterday received a message from Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi. The message was conveyed to the crown prince by Libyan Ambassador Muhammad Al-Qashat. The prince received another message from Bahraini Emir Sheikh Hamad ibn Isa Al-Khalifa.
