LISBON, 23 June — Riyadh Governor Prince Salman yesterday inaugurated the King Fahd Mosque in the Portuguese capital and said the Kingdom’s financial aid for Islamic projects abroad had no strings attached. The governor, who concluded a visit to Portugal yesterday, also announced a SR3.75 million ($1 million) donation by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Fahd to the mosque.
He made the announcement at a ceremony held to mark the naming of the mosque after King Fahd in appreciation of the Kingdom’s support for the project.
Abdul Majeed Wakeel, president of the Islamic Center in Lisbon, said King Fahd had agreed to make contributions to build a mosque in the northern Portuguese city of Porto, which is the European cultural capital for 2001.
Wakeel expressed his hope that the King Fahd Qur’an Printing Complex in Madinah would publish a translation of the Holy Qur’an in the Portuguese.
Prince Salman also attended a function aimed at naming the road leading to the complex as the mosque road.
Addressing the ceremony, the municipal chairman of Lisbon said Lisbon was honored by the royal visit.
The municipal chairman disclosed the plan to establish an institute for Islamic studies.
