JEDDAH, 27 June — Artists around the country gathered at the Saudi Arabian Airlines headquarters here on Monday to witness the fifth “Malwen” painting awards ceremony. Makkah Governor Prince Abdul Majeed presented the prizes to 24 winners out of 374 artists who submitted 786 entries in different categories.
The first winner for the adults category was Zaman Jasim who received the Golden Malwen along with an SR50,000 cash prize. Dr. Muhammad Fadul came second and received the Silver Malwen and SR35,000. The third prize went to Naser Al-Rifa’e who received the Bronze Malwen and SR20,000.
Nine runnersup in different categories won SR10,000 each. The winners of the children’s category were also given cash prizes of varying amounts.
Kamel Al-Sadat, the contest supervisor, said the judges included well-known artists from the Arab world who took considerable time to choose the winners.
Al-Sadat announced that the winning paintings would be exhibited at Hira Center as a part of the summer festival. “The show then will go around the country and will be accompanied by seminars,” said Al-Sadat.
