JEDDAH, 10 July — The challenges of globalization and their effect on the local economy will be one of the main topics discussed at the sixth annual businessmen’s conference in Taif next month.

Held with the support of Crown Prince Abdullah, deputy premier and commander of the National Guard and hosted by Taif Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the conference is expected to attract more than 1,000 businessmen and a large number of government officials, said Ismail Abu Dawood, chairman of the Council of Saudi Chambers of Commerce and Industry.

Other topics on the conference agenda include accelerating growth of the private sector and diversifying revenue sources for generating jobs for the rapidly growing Saudi work force.

Abu Dawood said the conference would highlight the pivotal role the private sector was playing in the national economy and outline requirements for its active participation with government agencies to further bolster the economic and social development of the country. He spoke of “substantive progress” made by the businessmen’s gatherings over the years. Instead of merely focusing on urgent issues, the meetings addressed a gamut of topics relating to the Saudi economy.

“These conferences have now turned into intellectual forums with a clear vision for the future...,” Abu Dawood said. (AWB)
