JEDDAH, 23 July — The Saudi Geological Survey will organize in September a workshop on the prospects of private sector investment in industrial minerals and their applications in the local economy.
SGS President Dr. Muhammad ibn Asaad Tawfiq said the workshop would highlight the growth of the mining sector over recent years and discuss ways of ensuring stronger involvement by the private sector.
A number of papers would be presented during the two-day event (Sept.18-19) on exploration and mining of industrial minerals, methods of extraction, modern applications and the types of industries that could benefit from them.
The workshop, to be held in cooperation with the British geological department, is the first joint effort in the area by the two counties.
Tawfiq said the participants would specifically focus on the investment side by outlining guidelines and indicators that would encourage the private sector participation.
Silica sand was recently discovered in commercial quantities in the Tabuk region in northern Saudi Arabia.
Tabuk Governor Prince Fahd ibn Sultan has invited private investment to exploit silica deposits in an area covering more than 40 square kilometers. He said this would help develop the mining sector and improve the region’s economy.
Tawfiq said SGS was conducting a survey and exploration work in various parts of the Kingdom to further develop the mining sector. (AWB)
