MAKKAH, 30 July — The number of road accidents and related deaths has dropped in the holy city of Makkah thanks to traffic awareness campaigns, according to Brig. Muhammad Al-Mulaihem, director of police.

Speaking to the Saudi Press Agency after meeting directors of government departments and private organizations at Hyatt Regency Hotel, he said the number of deaths declined by 9 percent and accidents by 7 percent.

He said the meeting discussed matters related to the second phase of a national traffic awareness campaign, which would focus on the role of drug addiction and speeding in causing accidents.

Mulaihem said the campaign in Makkah would begin on Sept. 18, or Rajab 1, and run for three months. He said the campaign would include various activities such as seminars and lectures to enhance public awareness on road safety.

Col. Ameen Abdul Hameed, chairman of the central committee for organizing the campaign, said all government departments as well as the private sector would take part in the campaign.
