DAMMAM, 20 August — Prince Saud ibn Abdullah ibn Thunayyan, chairman of the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu, has told authorities to halt the demolition of old housing units on the Corniche in Jubail until arrangements can be made to accommodate their residents.
The Royal Commission had earlier urged residents of the 317 temporary housing units in the area to vacate the houses so they could be demolished. However, the residents demanded that the authorities first provide them with alternative housing.
Prince Saud gave the order to delay the proposed demolition after personally inspecting the area.
“The prince has urged the authorities to keep the buildings as they are, at least until alternative arrangements can be made to accommodate the people who live in them,” Abdullah Al-Ajami, director of public relations at the Royal Commission, told Arab News.
Al-Ajami said the Royal Commission allowed the employees of certain government departments to stay in these houses until they find long-term accommodation.
“These buildings were constructed for temporary use during the establishment of the new housing estate in the industrial city,” he pointed out.
