JEDDAH, 23 August — Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Fahd has been nominated by the World Health Organization for its international prize this year, in appreciation of his campaign against smoking. The prize will be awarded during a meeting of the WHO’s regional committee for the Middle East in Riyadh, to be held between Sept. 30 and Oct. 3.

The WHO has declared Madinah a smoking-free city and has nominated both Makkah and Madinah for the same status. It will set out a plan to combat smoking in the two holy cities. King Fahd issued a decree in 1984 banning smoking at government offices and facilities. (SPA)
