JEDDAH, 14 September — Visitors crowded stands showcasing mobile phones and Internet software on the opening day of the week-long CompuNet and CommTel show at the Jeddah International Exhibition and Convention Center yesterday.
Three hundred brands are represented on 75 stands, with products ranging from hardware and peripherals to software, services and office equipment. The twin exhibitions showcase the high technology world of the personal computer (PC) coupled with a computer shopper section, which features low-cost, budget and bargain computers and peripherals. “That’s where the best deals are likely to be found,” according to the organizers, Al-Harithy Company for Exhibitions Ltd. Alongside a Ministry of Information stand and local computer firms are participants from countries like the United Arab Emirates and Germany. CompuNet incorporates computing, Internet, office equipment and accessories, aside from the computer shopper. CommTel covers business communication, multimedia and mobile phones.
Among other products that attract attention is an automatic vehicle location system (AVLS), a standalone version designed for PC to provide powerful vehicle tracking, remote control and fleet management solutions. According to Ahmad M. Ayache, an engineer at the technical division of the Jeddah-based Marsed Net Ltd., the system utilizes global positioning system (GPS), wireless modem and geographic information system (GPS) to perform fully automated vehicle localizations. “Multiple units can be monitored simultaneously in the home PC,” he said. The show will remain open from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. until Sept. 19.
