ABHA, 22 October — Jizan police are investigating how a truck carrying a large quantity of liquor passed undetected through five checkpoints dotted throughout the southern parts of the Kingdom.
The truck, with an Emirate registration plate claiming to be carrying bananas from Yemen to Jordan, in fact had 4,230 bottles of liquor hidden under its 900 cartons.
The smuggling attempt was foiled by a police team during a routine check at Al-Horaidah, 146 km south of Abha on Jeddah Road.
Police sources view as unusually serious the passage of such a large quantity of the contraband across the Yemen-Saudi border checkpoint as a serious matter. The truck had also passed through the Al-Tiwal, Sabya, Abu Arish, Baysh and Al-Hamrah checkpoints without hindrance.
The police have already arrested the expatriate driver of the truck.
