RIYADH, 28 October — The Interior Ministry has endorsed new laws governing the import of fireworks and conditions for their use. The statutes nullify all previous orders in conflict with the new regulations.

The Civil Defense Directorate will coordinate and follow up the implementation of the statutes which stipulate that any agency desiring to hold a fireworks display will have to get prior permission from the provincial governorate.

The application for permission will be referred to the weapons and explosive department of the police with a request to allow import of fireworks material.

The statutes also stipulate that the fireworks show should be conducted by experienced hands and all safety regulations must be strictly followed before the show begins. Spectators should watch the show from a safe distance. The shows should not be held close to residential areas, car parks, fuel stations and other vital installations.

A sufficient number of fire engines should be kept ready to meet any untoward incident, the new law says. (SPA)
