RIYADH, 27 November — Saudi Telecom Company announced yesterday that it would introduce prepaid mobile phone chips after the Haj season. The decision was taken by STC’s board of directors.
Khaled Al-Gosaibi, acting minister of posts, telegraphs and telephones and chairman of the board, said the meeting also decided to expand the broadband data transmission and high speed Internet browsing services.
“We expect substantial progress in providing various services in different parts of the Kingdom at a reasonable tariff,” Gosaibi said.
STC recently announced the expansion in the coverage area of DSL Internet Access Service. The service is available in Jeddah, Makkah, Taif, Dammam and Riyadh from 1st of Ramadan.
DSL service allows users to connect to their ISPs at high speed. No special cabling is required because the service works on ordinary phone lines. With this service, users can browse the web and talk on the phone at the same time. The service costs SR220 per month. A one-time fee of SR300 is charged for installation of the service.
“To obtain the service, users are requested to contact one of the 24 approved DSL service providers,” the STC said.
