‘Sharif has right to return to country’

ISLAMABAD, 29 November — Deposed Pakistani Premier Nawaz Sharif has the right to return to the country, a senior leader of archrival and former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto’s Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has said. He was referring to reports that some members of Sharif’s family, currently living in Saudi Arabia, have arrived in the Pakistani city of Lahore.

PPP Vice Chairman Makhdoom Amin Fahim yesterday said Sharif must return to Pakistan, as it was his basic right, Online news agency reported. He went on to say: “I think both Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif have the right to be in their homeland. They must return and if there are chances of the Sharif family’s return it is a welcome sign.” Asked whether the return of Sharif’s family would have an impact on Pakistan’s political situation, he said: “Definitely, there would be an impact.

“I have heard that (Sharif’s brother) Shahbaz Sharif’s wife is already in Lahore. Let them come and we can check what happens later.” On whether a deal had been struck between Sharif’s family and President Pervez Musharraf’s regime, he said: “I don’t know. This issue is relevant to those who are involved.
