JEDDAH, 1 December — Saudi authorities have arrested two foreigners after they put white powder in an envelope mailed from the United Arab Emirates and addressed to one of their colleagues.

The two foreigners, an Egyptian and a Syrian, were arrested in Baha province, 1,000 kilometers (625 miles) southwest of Riyadh, the province’s director of security Gen. Abdul Rahman Al-Senidi said, according to Al-Madinah Arabic daily.

The men will appear before a Shariah court to answer for their behavior, Senidi said.

The head of Shariah courts in Baha province, Mudhar Al-Qarni, warned earlier this month that those who spread rumors about anthrax will be flogged and jailed, even if the rumor was for "fun".

Since news of the first anthrax attack emerged from the United States, numerous bio-terror scare cases have been reported in the Kingdom and the Ministry of Health set up a special committee to deal with the situation.
