JEDDAH, 2 December — The Traffic Department will hold a camp at the parking area of the Education Ministry stadium off Madinah Road here today to enlighten the public on the dangers of reckless driving and drug abuse.
Jeddah Governor Prince Mishaal ibn Majed will open the camp which includes exhibition, religious lectures and seminars.
Maj. Gen. Saeed Abdullah Al-Qahtani, director of police in the Makkah region, told Arab News that the camp is part of the second phase of a nationwide traffic awareness campaign aimed at bringing down the number of road accidents in the country.
Some 3,000 people are killed and 26,000 injured annually in the Kingdom in road accidents which also result in an economic loss of more than SR7 billion a year.
Qahtani said similar camps will be organized in other major cities in the region like Taif.
Traffic and patrol police officers will be deployed in large numbers all over the city to enhance safety awareness and punish violators.
Brig. Saleh Ibrahim Al-Olayan, director of police in Jeddah, said the camp will be held with the active participation of residents in the area.
