RIYADH/MADINAH, 13 January — The Madinah region registered 53 tremors measuring between 4.12 and 3.28 on the Richter scale over three days up to last Wednesday. The epicenter of the tremors was in the Red Sea, off Yanbu.
The Saudi Center for Earthquake Studies, a subsidiary of the Geological Survey of Saudi Arabia, said in a statement that the first tremor was registered at 8.49 p.m. on Sunday. The tremors continued to be felt repeatedly until 6.55 p.m. on Wednesday, the report added.
However, the people in Madinah did not feel any tremors or other signs of earthquake.
The epicenter of these mild quakes was located 120 kilometers southwest of the Yanbu coast in the Red Sea.
A team of geologists will launch a study on the underground earth plates in the peninsula shortly, according to Prof. Abdullah Muhammad Al-Amri of the King Saud University in Riyadh.
The study will be conducted jointly by the Earthquake Studies Center in the university and Berkeley University in California, he said.
An international research station for earthquake studies will be set up at the Halban center, he said. The findings of the station will be of great importance to the construction industry in the Kingdom.
