JEDDAH, 25 January — Security officials in Jizan have arrested seven members of an expatriate gambling ring, press reports said yesterday.

Col. Obaid Al-Khomas, director of Jizan police, told Al-Madinah newspaper that the seven Filipinos were arrested during a raid on an apartment following a tip-off. The leader of the racket was employed as an engineer at a health care provider in the region.

During questioning, the Filipinos admitted that they were linked via Internet to a huge Thai gambling network.

Each player had to stake a big sum and the money was collected by a shadowy person, unknown to the local operators and identified by secret code words, for transferring to Thailand, the paper quoted the gang leader as saying in his confession to the police.
