RIYADH, 25 January — R. Manigbas and J. Morales top scored Yamaha Al-Dawliah 22 and 21 points and powered the team to a convincing victory 88-80 over the Paradise catering squad. Yamaha Al Dawliah bounced back to even the score 1-1 in the best of three-championship game of the Riyadh Basketball League (RBL) inter-company basketball tournament, held at the Al Yamamah Hotel basketball court here.
J. Morales unaffected by the cold climate spark early to lead his team 16-4 half way in the first quarter while Paradise Catering had a slow start and went on scoreless four minutes in the game. Coach Pataghan tried to regroup by calling a time out late in the first quarter and finish the game 31-21. The second quarter became a battle between two court tacticians. Early in the second quarter Yamaha widen their lead to 19 points that prompted coach Pataghan to impose the trap defense. D. Almario scored 12 of his27 point output in the second quarter that brought them closer to 3 point behind Yamaha. But in the last two minutes of the second quarter R. Abellana had an injury force him to the bench in the rest of the game. The first half ended 54-42 in favor of Yamaha.
Early in the third quarter, R. Bautista lead a come back by hitting 2 triple jumpers while Almario and Regala did their share in the board. But Manigbas, Morales and de Leon never slowed down and ended the third quarter 68-59.Paradise did a good defense in the fourth quarter of the game but Almario who topscored Paradise fouled out 2 minute remaining in regulation. With Almarios absence in the court Yamaha gained an advantage and manage to manipulate a power play that sent Solier and De la Cruz, the last remaining defensive player of Paradise, into foul trouble. Manigbas, De Leon and Morales nailed the victory 88-80. Coach Gutierrez did an exceptional game plan to even with Paradise1-1 and the game three, the deciding game, would be more spectacular than the game 1 and 2. on Friday January 25,2002.
