Kingdom, Iran sign deal to cooperate on environment

TEHRAN, 8 February — Saudi Arabia and Iran signed an agreement of cooperation on environmental and wildlife protection in a meeting of the joint committee which ended its meeting here yesterday.

In a statement by the Saudi Press Agency following the fourth session of the Saudi-Iranian joint committee, under the co-chairmanship of Commerce Minister Osama Faqeeh and his Iranian counterpart Muhammad Shariatmadari, Faqeeh said he had signed another agreement on the commissioning of a shipping line between King Abdul Aziz Port and the Iran’s Bushahar Port which will boost the mutual trade between the two countries.

Since to an agreement signed two years ago, air transport was resumed between the two countries, and Saudi Arabian Airlines has transported more than 30,000 Haj pilgrims from Iran to Jeddah during the current Haj season.

"The private sector in the Kingdom, which plays a key role in the development of the national economy, has a major role in strengthening our relations with Iran and other friendly countries," Faqeeh said.

The minutes of the meeting included a number of recommendations, such as increasing of the mutual trade, customs cooperation, encouraging exchange of visits between businessmen, and cooperation in the area of specification standardization, the minister said.

Faqeeh, who left Tehran yesterday, was seen off at Teheran’s Mehrabad Airport by Shariatmadari, the Kingdom’s Ambassador to Iran, Jameel Al-Jashi, and a number of high-ranking officials. (SPA)
