JEDDAH, 10 February — Shariah courts in various parts of the Kingdom dealt with 616 murder cases in a single year, Al-Riyadh Arabic daily reported yesterday. The paper said courts in the Makkah region handled the largest number with 152 cases in the year 1420H (1999-2000).
The murder cases were handled by courts in 20 regions and principalities. Courts in the Asir region considered 100 murder cases, second only to Makkah, followed by the Riyadh region with 73 cases, the Eastern Province with 70 and Madinah with 68.
Jizan courts looked into 61 murder cases, while courts in Qasim took up 28 cases, Tabuk 18, Hail 15, Ahsa 11, the Northern Border Province five, Baha 4, Majmaa 4, Jouf 3, Dawadmi two and one each in Najran and Qunfuda.
