JEDDAH, 12 February — “Western impressions of the Muslim woman” is the subject of a lecture by visiting US Professor Elizabeth Warnock Fernea at Effat Girls College here tomorrow. The event, set to begin at 10 a.m., is being organized with the support of Princess Lulua Al-Faisal.

Fernea is professor emeritus of English and Middle Eastern studies at Austin University, Texas. She has authored several books and produced a number of documentaries on the Middle East, for which she has won many prizes.

Considered to be one of the first American researchers on women in the Middle East, Fernea recently completed a documentary film project for the European Union.

As a lecturer and expert on Middle East affairs, she is known not only in America but also in different Arab capitals where she lived for 10 years.

Aside from her impressive academic career, Fernea always found sufficient time to indulge in her other favorite pursuit: Mid-Eastern studies to which end she has developed a lifelong attachment, according to a local academic.

Her travels in the Arab world was quite extensive, so was the bulk of her literary output. Fernea has written several award-winning books, contributed countless articles to newspapers and magazines, delivered many lectures, and made a number of documentary films. She has devoted a substantial portion of her rich contribution to Mideast issues, both social and political.

Tickets for the lecture are priced at SR50 and will be available at the college entrance. Female students of linguistics and translation are being offered tickets at SR30.
