JEDDAH, 8 March — Sheikh Omar Muhammad Al-Subail, 44, imam of the Grand Mosque in Makkah, is still in coma, according to his brother Yousuf Al-Subail. The imam, in the intensive care unit, is being treated at the Armed Forces Hospital in Taif. He was admitted to the hospital following a road accident last week. The impact of the accident left him unconscious, and he was admitted to the hospital in that state.
“He did not suffer major injuries or fractures to his body, but suffered injuries to his head during the accident leaving him in a coma,” Yousuf told Arab News. He requested all Muslims to pray for the imam’s quick recovery.
The accident occurred on the Taif-Riyadh Expressway while Sheikh Omar was traveling in his private car with his family — wife, four sons and two daughters. His family members escaped with minor injuries.
Yousuf also disclosed that the imam’s wife had delivered another daughter two days after the accident.
Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Fahd and Crown Prince Abdullah, deputy premier and commander of the National Guard, had inquired about the imam’s health. Prince Sultan, second deputy premier and minister of defense and aviation, has ordered that an ambulance plane be kept ready for the imam.
