Drug trafficker guns down cop

RIYADH, 21 March — A police officer and a drug trafficker died last Monday following a gunfight, Al-Riyadh newspaper reported yesterday, quoting Maj. Gen. Abdullah Al-Shahrani, director of Riyadh police. The police officer died when the drug trafficker opened fire on security officers who tried to arrest him. "Captain Mazen Al-Motairy was injured by gunfire and later died in hospital as a result of the injury," the police chief said. He added that the drug trafficker was wanted in connection with a number of criminal cases. Meanwhile, Qassim police arrested a car robber in possession of a large quantity of drugs, Al-Riyadh newspaper reported yesterday. The man stole a car last month and the police have since been trying to to track him down. A Saudi later informed the police that he had found the stolen car with a stranger. Security officers caught the man even though he tried to flee.
