Jenin is very much in the news these days, but most people know very little about the place.
One of the oldest cities in the world, Jenin was founded in the year 2540 B.C. Jenin has been mentioned in the ancient manuscripts of the Egyptians, Babylonians and Assyrians, in addition to the books of the Jews and the Christians.
The population of Jenin Province amounts to about 2,35000people, distributed between 84 cities, towns and villages. The Jenin City population is more than 33,000 inhabitants, while the UN places the number of registered individuals in the Jenin Refugee Camp at about 13,000.
Incursions into the area of Jenin by the Zionists are nothing new. The first Zionist settlement in the area was Yizre’el, established in 1948. It replaced the destroyed and “cleansed” Palestinian village of Zir’in. For more information on past Zionist destruction in Jenin see www.palestine-net.com/geography/cleansed/jenin.html.
Jenin Province is an area of historic and natural beauty. Its people have suffered horrifically under the occupation. To learn more about Jenin and its inhabitants visit www.pal-chambers.com/chambers/jenin.html. To get a more personal view of Jenin, see two amateur websites. The first, www.palestine-jenin.subnet.dk/, has been mounted by N. Muhammed Turkman and amongst other photos at the site is included a picture of his family’s home in the area. The second site, www.abuajaj.com, belongs to Khalid Muhammed Abu Ajaj, a Palestinian doctoral student, born in 1969 in Jenin.
