JEDDAH, 29 April— A UAE-based medical college has drawn up a plan to establish a medical university, a hospital and a research center. “All these will be of world-class, and will be provided in phases in the next eight years,” Dr. Ammar A. Latif, associate dean clinical students affairs and international relations, at the Gulf Medical College, Ajman, said here yesterday.

Dr. Latif heads a three-member team from the Gulf Medical College, Ajman, which is here to shortlist students for MBBS and bachelor of physiotherapy (BPT) courses.

“The GMCA has received the initial approval by the UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. Our vision is to get recognition worldwide for our MBBS and BPT degree programs. Members of the medical councils of Pakistan, Iran and Bangladesh have inspected the college and have approved the program. The college is in the process of tying up with reputed universities in Europe, the United States, India, Pakistan, Jordan, Iran, Germany and other countries,” Dr. Latif told Arab News.

The annual intake is 100 students for MBBS, which has a duration of five years plus one year’s internship, and 25 students for the four-year bachelor of physiotherapy course.

At present students of 29 nationalities are studying in the college.

The GMCA was established on Jan. 28, 1998, following a decree by Humaid ibn Rashid Al-Nuaimi, ruler of Ajman and member of the UAE Supreme Council.
