Kampala varsity block named after King Fahd

JEDDAH, 2 August — A new block of the Islamic University in the heart of Ugandan capital Kampala has been named after King Fahd.

The SR30 million King Fahd Charitable Complex was built with Saudi financial assistance granted to university, an offshoot of the Organization of Islamic Conference, on the orders of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Fahd.

The block will also house the Saudi Cultural Center in Uganda.

According to a statement of the Ministry of Finance and National Economy, the Kingdom’s assistance to the university in addition to the construction cost of the building, has totaled SR52.5 million.

The university aims to impart advanced Islamic education to the students of eastern Africa.

The 7,327 square meter block with an eight-story tower and two-story building constructed by a Saudi contracting company has officially been handed over to the university. High ranking Ugandan officials, university officials and Saudi Embassy staff attended the handing-over ceremony, Saudi Press Agency reported yesterday.

In other foreign aid programs, four truckloads of medicine sent on the orders of King Fahd as part of emergency help to the Afghan people arrived at Mazar-e-Sharif recently. Charge d’Affaires at the Saudi mission in Afghanistan Abdullah Al-Qahtani handed over the SR1 million worth relief shipment to the governor of Balkh province, Sayed Ishaq, in the presence of Osama Mustafa Sharifi, regional director of the Saudi Committee for Afghan Relief Osama Mustafa Sharifi.

Meanwhile, a convoy of 60 trucks loaded with relief materials for Palestinian people will arrive in Amman tomorrow. Saudi Ambassador to Jordan Abdul Rahman Al-Ouhali said the convoy carried foodstuffs , medicines and blankets for the people of West Bank and Gaza.

According to Okaz daily yesterday, donations collected from Riyadh’s traders and philanthropists for assisting Palestinians have reached SR1 million.
