JEDDAH, 15 September — A judge was shot in the head by unidentified assailants as he drove his car in the northern city of Sakaka, police said yesterday. The motive behind Friday’s attack on Sheikh Abdul Rahman Al-Sahibani, 35, was unclear. Sahibani was shot while he was heading to a mosque to lead Friday prayers.

A bullet was removed from his head in Sakaka before he was taken to King Khaled University Hospital in Riyadh for further treatment.

The director of police in the region told the Saudi Press Agency that the incident took place at 12.30 p.m.

Sahibani, a judge at the summary court in Sakaka, lost control of the car after being shot and it hit a wall about 150 meters from the spot,” the police chief said. He said an investigation has been launched.

The judge was in a coma at the intensive care unit of the Riyadh hospital.
