DUBAI, 30 November 2002 — General Motors (GM) is to carry out safety checks on airbags and head restraints in certain North American vehicles sold in Saudi Arabia.
“These are purely precautionary measures and no incidents have been reported,” said a spokesman at the GM Africa & Middle East office here.
In certain 2002-2003 Cadillac DeVille, Chevrolet TrailBlazer and Venture, and GMC Envoy models, driver-side airbags will be replaced after a potentially faulty weld was discovered. In the Kingdom, only 50 vehicles will be recalled.
In addition, owners of 1,206 GMC Sierras and Yukons of model year 2000 are being asked by retailers to bring in their vehicles for a computer modification because some front-seat airbags may fail to deploy. Owners of 2000-2002 GMC Yukons are also being contacted because head restraints on second row seats could cause a pinching injury as the seats are folded. Some 5,538 vehicles are involved.
In a separate recall, 249 GMC Savana vans made for 2003 will have new retaining nuts installed in the wheel-bearing assembly. During manufacturing, some vehicles were made without these nuts and this could lead to possible separation.
The spokesman said: “Retailers will make contact with the owners of vehicles affected. However, customers may call retailers with queries or the GM Customer Communications Center. We apologize to owners for this inconvenience.”
