JEDDAH, 5 December 2002 — A Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) member of Parliament Daud Ahmad refuted all allegations of the Samajwadi Party’s smear campaign against the Uttar Pradesh government.

Daud, who represents Shahabad constituency in Parliament, was in the Kingdom to perform Umrah. According to reports Mayawati had lauded the Supreme Court’s ruling on the transfer of all cases relating to the 1992 Babri Mosque demolition to a special court in Rae Bareli.

Deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani and 20 other leaders of his Hindu extremist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its hard-line affiliate Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) were charged with razing the 16th century mosque.

The cases were dropped in February 2001 following an order from the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court. The high court clarified that a revival of the case was possible if government issues fresh notification but Mayawati ruled it out. Daud says that Mayawati’s intentions are quite clear. He believes her — “Each and every decision taken by me in Ayodhya case was properly weighed”.

Mayawati’s government gave proper representation to Muslims in the state police force and now most major districts have Muslim district magistrates and police superintendents. Mayawati’s government has given Muslims eight percent reservation in the state police.

Speaking about the recent communal violence in the western Indian state of Gujarat, Daud blamed Chief Minister Narendra Modi and VHP for the carnage in Gujarat. The alleged conspiracy was aimed at ethnic cleansing of Muslims and was hatched by VHP to reap election victory, he said.
