JEDDAH, 27 December 2002 — The limelight shifted to SPIC prime bowler Angel Decena after he scored a perfect 300; and to Sid Lapena of the Al Alamiah Insektos who led his team to the fore when the 9th week of the Tuesday Night Bowling League wrapped up here at Jeddah Bowling Center. Decena was the first bowler to achieve the perfect 300 in this 4th Conference; and the third since BBG organized a league at JBC.
The perfect score was Decena’s second feat since he played tenpin bowling in Jeddah — his first was in an open tournament held at the historic Al Bilad Hotel Bowling Center at Corniche where he was awarded a brand new Grand Marquis car.
“It was my very lucky night”, sighed Decena, who sent to oblivion two current records in the individual category — the high game scratch recorded by Hashim Guinomla (274) and the high game with handicap held Gil Martos (277). Notwithstanding the perfect score and an entry to the BBG Elite Bowlers Club, the 9th bowler of the week award was snatched by Sid Lapena of Al Alamiah Insektos. Lapena, equipped with an 8-pin handicap per game, rolled off a 3-game series of 712 while zero-handicap Decena tallied at only 690 after he met couple of splits on the final game (187).
Lapena hit 265 at the start, which also served as his initial entry card to the BBG Elite Bowlers Club.
He fired a scratch score of 212 on the second try and drilled 211 on the last game.
His scratch series (688) was fortified by a handicap of 24 pins in three games.
Lapena’s personal best record erased the 700 mark in the high series with handicap set by Roger Dacquioag and by Ding Abaygar. The unprecedented performances of Lapena led Al Alamiah Insektos to grab the team of the week distinction at a total score of 64 points and to capture the number one position in the table from erstwhile leader Al Sayaad Establishment with a running score of 464.5. Nonie Yap, Mao Orolfo, Kiko Catabas and Zaldy Parinas provided the much-needed assists to produce a 3-game series of 2986 (17 points).
The “Insektos” submitted 995 (15 points), 1017 (14) and 974 (18). Al Sayaad Establishment registered 31.5 points after the lack-luster games at the start (888 pins for 4 points) and at the last game (899 for 4 points) that caused Al Sayaad to relegate the top position to Al Alamiah. Al Sayaad has now a running tally of 441 points. Jess Pineda, Rudy Punzalan, Val Magsino, Cyril Balasico and Cosa Sta. Ana played for Al Sayaad.
Angel Decena (300) enrolled himself to the BBG Elite Bowlers Club.
He was joined by Bonnie Garcia who scored 257. It’s the second entry card for Nap Patayan and Danny Bautista after submitting 254 and 255, respectively.
The Club is very exclusive that it welcomes bowlers who have recorded a scratch score of at least 250.
To be named an Elite, a bowler has to submit at least 5 records of 250 and above. The 7-bagger awards were presented to Sid Lapena, Angel Decena, Nap Patayan and Danny Bautista. Danny Bautista and Ed Labuac were winners of the “Sakuna” award.
Val Magsino and Toto Lim won special prizes for converting into spare the 5-10 split while a special award was presented to Obie Ycasas for converting into spare the 4-7-10 split. In other results, Top Gun fired 56.5 points after it snatched the big 18 points on the second game when Bonnie Garcia (257), Bert Tuvera (212), Goying Salazar (203), Rudy Valenzuela (200) and Leo Edejer (191) swept 1102 pins including handicap (39).
The best series of the quintet powered Top Gun to claim the 18 maximum bonus points at a series of 2992. The perfect game of Angel Decena forced SPIC to collect 57 points at the tune of 18 (1027 pins), 10 (945) and 13 (934).
It received 16 bonus points for submitting a 3-game series of 2906 pins.
Dante Calapatia, Rene Martinez, Roger Daquioag and Atoi Cruz supported Decena. Al Zamil Heavy Industries produced 54 points when Nap Patayan, Rene Santiago, Allan Sanoza, Gil Ordonez and Rey Pormilda blasted the lanes with a series of 945 (10), 974 (12) and 972 pins (17) in games 1, 2, and 3, respectively.
It earned 15 bonus points for delivering a 3-game series of 2891. PICPA-PRO recorded 52 points after Gil Martos, Lindo Villanueva, Toto Lim, Emil Payongayong and Ed Alisbo journalized a series of 2882 (14 points).
The ‘accountants‚ entered into their books the scores of 16 points (1011 pins) at the start and two 11 points on games two and three at the sum of 950 and 921, respectively. Danny de Guzman, Fred Monzon, Hero Garcia, Edu Toledo and Rod Morales provided SkyFreight Forwarders a total of 49 points.
