MANAMA, 5 January 2003 — A magistrate yesterday ordered six young men suspected of rioting in Bahrain on New Year’s Eve to remain in custody for a week.

The six, aged 16-22, were questioned about their role in the rampage by hundreds of youths through Manama which damaged seven hotels, two restaurants and 125 vehicles. Formal charges were not brought. The authorities arrested 41 people after the vandalism and later released an unspecified number of people.

Prime Minister Sheikh Khalifa ibn Salman Al-Khalifa warned Thursday that the “saboteurs” would be “well-disciplined.” Riot police armed with batons, shields and tear gas were out in force to quell the rioters, said to number around 2,000. (AFP)
