JEDDAH, 19 January 2003 — Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou will lead a high-level delegation from Greece to the Kingdom as part of a European Union move to avert the impending US-led attack on Iraq.
"Our minister will be visiting the Kingdom on Feb. 3," the Greek Consul General, George Dogoritis, told Arab News yesterday.
"Papandreou will call on Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Fahd and Crown Prince Abdullah, deputy premier and commander of the National Guard, and also discuss with Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al-Faisal the matter of Iraq," he said.
"Greece is making the move as it is ‘next door’ and enjoys excellent relations with the Arab world. It believes that a diplomatic solution can be found by seeking an assurance that Iraq will abide by UN Resolution 1441."
He stipulated that Iraq must comply with the UN resolution and cooperate fully with the UN inspectors.
"Greece supports the Kingdom’s foreign policy on Iraq and also Crown Prince Abdullah’s Middle East peace initiative," said Dogoritis.
